13,000 New Australian Citizens Welcomed on Australia Day 2009
January 26, 2009 marked the 60th year of Australia's Nationality and Citizenship Act which created the concept of "Australian Citizenship".

As part of the celebrations, approximately 13,000 people from 120 countries became Australian Citizens.

Australia’s newest citizens will join more than four million other people who have chosen to become Australian citizens since the first citizenship ceremony in 1949.

Minister for Immigration, Chris Evans said "The 60th anniversary of citizenship is an opportunity for us to reflect on the changes that have shaped our nation over the past six decades, and a chance for all Australians to understand the role that citizenship plays in building a strong and unified nation."

"Australia has been enriched by the cultures and traditions of people from more than 200 countries who have chosen to make a home in our great nation".

318 Citizenship ceremonies were held across Australia on the 26th, which were spread from small events in remote communities, through to large ceremonies in Australia's major cities.

In South Australia, 40 people became Australian Citizens during the one-day cricket match against South Africa at the Adelaide oval, while in Canberra, prime minister Kevin Rudd presided over the a ceremony that saw 60 people gain Australian Citizenship.
